Do leggings make your bum look bigger?

leggings making a bum look big in gym

Leggings are a fashion staple. Suitable for dressing up, dressing down or working out in, they’re an easy and comfortable way of staying stylish day-to-day.

We’ve just added a collection of ribbed gym leggings to our store, so we wanted to look deeper at whether this piece of unassuming form-fitting clothing can enhance your behind.

Do leggings make your bum look bigger?

Most leggings won’t *technically* make your bum bigger.  But they can make it look bigger.  Mainly because leggings are tight-fighting.  They cling to your body and this can create the illusion of bigness. Think about it. Most clothing we wear has some give in it or there’s extra, baggy fabric. But leggings are tighter and more form-fitting. They can help to accentuate what you have in a way that’s not as noticeable when you’re wearing jeans or looser clothing.  Some legging manufacturers claim to have bum-boosting qualities but you should always be sceptical.  They’ll add some panelling to the back or “support” but it’s unlikely you’ll see any dramatic improvement.

We recommend that you look for high-waisted leggings as these suck you in at the waist to create an optical illusion making it look like your butt is bigger.  Real or perceived – the result is the same. High-waisted leggings are popular with those who work out because they create a flattering shape and can highlight definition.

One tip for outside the gym is to wear high heels. These make you look taller and alter your standing posture by making the leg straighter. This helps your bum look bigger compared to when you’re wearing flat shoes.  It’s why leggings look great with heels.

Given that we’re big into going to the gym, we’d be remiss if we didn’t suggest exercise as a way to boost your bum shape.  You won’t need to rely so much on enhancement clothing if you already have the definition.  Whilst exercise won’t get the booty of your dreams overnight (or maybe even ever – thanks genetics!), it will get you in shape and is a great way to boost your body confidence. Something that leggings often excel in showing off.

What colour leggings make your bum look good?

Black is always a good choice.  It's slimming, shows the definition and also creates a smooth silhouette.  Dark coloured leggings are understated. Black also goes with pretty much everything – whether you’re going out or working out – so they’re a staple in a lot of women’s wardrobes.  Workout leggings come in a range of colours that you can match with cropped tops and t-shirts to give an athletic vibe. Of course, black may be a slimming colour but real confidence is wearing what makes you happy, so don’t be afraid to shop around for bold blocks of colour or patterns.

Are leggings comfortable?

The right pair of leggings will be very comfortable.  It’s partly why they’re so popular both in the gym and outside.  It's important to get the right size and to allow for a full range of movement if you’re planning on exercising in them.

Can you wear leggings while working out?

Absolutely.  It’s why they’re so popular.  Gym leggings provide a fashion-forward approach to exercise that allows you to work out effectively.  One thing we’d suggest is trying out a squat test before wearing them to the gym.  Try bending over in the mirror to see if the material goes sheer. Some cheaper leggings can go see-through when you squat which can be embarrassing in public and could easily throw you off your focus.  Seamless leggings are useful for exercising in because it’s often the seams that are the weak point.  People who are self-conscious or who have body confidence issues may be wary about such a form-fitting item of clothing but leggings can be incredibly flattering.  And there’s always the option to wear a baggy t-shirt over the top.

Why do leggings fall down?

Getting the right pair of leggings can make all the difference in how we feel when we exercise.  Appearance can be important: we want to look good so that we can focus on what we’re doing.  At the very least, we don’t want to feel self-conscious or ridiculous in what we’ve got on.  Choosing the wrong size is one obvious reason your leggings will fall down.  Where possible, measure yourself and compare these numbers to the manufacturer’s sizing rather than relying on traditional sizing.  One designer’s medium is another’s small.  Going down a size where possible should help reduce the amount of excess elastic or fabric sliding off the hip or waist. You should remember that people have different proportions and the difference in hip size between person A and person B could be enough to throw the way it sits out entirely.  Old leggings will have reduced elasticity and may start slipping once they’re worn out.
